Jussie Smollett has been making the rounds, a report of his attack from ABC news claims that the attack was staged, and was done due to his allegedly being written off of the show he works on, ‘Empire.’ Of course, political team sports picks up right where it left off with the Nick Sandmann, Nathan Phillips incident, and many on the right have been quick to share the ABC news article, and others that followed mirroring the claim that the attack was a hoax. As we know of the Sandmann incident, the media and individuals were much too quick to assume the truth in headlines, and what has followed from that situation has been quite the display.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Police Department sent out a tweet saying “incident being a hoax are unconfirmed by case detectives.” They also released a statement Friday saying “Interviews will resume today with the two people of interest and their attorney. While we haven’t found any video documenting the alleged attack, there is also no evidence to say that this is a hoax. The alleged victim is being cooperative at this time and continues to be treated as the victim, not a suspect. The investigation continues.”
Up to now we know that there is no existing video of the attack so far, the police department has received surveillance of surrounding stores near the area of the attack to see if anyone bought rope around the time the incident occurred. Smollett claimed to be on the phone with his manager when the attack occurred, who claimed to have heard racist and homophobic remarks, this led to authorities requesting phone records. When first asked to hand over his phone to the police, Smollett denied the request and instead sent a PDF of his phone records, which was rejected by the police department due to it having been “heavily redacted.”
At the moment, we’re not entirely sure what happened that night, and as stated by the police the investigation is still ongoing. At this point it’s not clear exactly what happened, however, it is amusing watching the political circus continue on as usual. There are certainly facets of this story that lead one to believe something isn’t as it seems with Smollett’s report of the incident, but following the situation at the Lincoln Memorial one would have assumed outlets and individuals would have learned their lesson on eagerly sharing unproven headlines that align with the narrative they favor.
Perhaps further investigation will provide us all with information that can allow a more confident and accurate statement from those conducting the investigation itself. Until then, it would be wise to sit on sharing definitive statements regarding the case. It would be quite the turn of events if the right were to get smacked by the very same hand of truth that they praised having smacked the left just a short time prior.
EDIT: An article recently released has reported that two Nigerian brothers have been arrested in relation to the case.
EDIT: A new update claims police sources suggest the attack was orchestrated.
EDIT: Since the last edit (above) there have been many developments.
EDIT: In a shocking turn of events, Jussie Smollett has been cleared, as Cook County prosecutors have dropped of charges regarding this case.
The judge read a statement regarding the case:
“Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him,” the statement said. “Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgement. Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions,”
“This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong. It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.”
“Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends and career.”
